Executive Director National Public Safety Solutions, Inc. Billerica, Massachusetts, United States
Uniformed personnel dedicate their lives to serving others, often at great personal sacrifice. Their career is moving along when suddenly a line-of-duty injury (LODI) occurs. Often in a moment their lives change. Future plans may be put on hold or dissolved completely. Family dynamics may change. Identity challenges may surface. Whether a temporary issue or a career ending injury, a LODI needs to be addressed directly.
This presentation will explore the concept of a line-of-duty injury as a critical incident that often requires careful and coordinated peer and clinical support. What might be some of the reactions of those injured? How do co-workers respond? How should peer support approach these people? How do we begin the conversation?
This presentation will share some of the insights gained in working with LODI personnel in both field and residential settings. Lessons learned including what works and doesn’t work for the injured person will be explored. Resiliency in terms of these types of situations will also be looked at. Actual cases will be presented and participants will practice planning for and doing Peer Support sessions for someone with a LODI.
