CISM (Critical Incident Stress Management) is a simple, but highly effective method to help individuals process traumatic events. Mindfulness involves both formal and informal practice of focusing one’s awareness on one’s present moment experience, while cultivating attitudes of self-compassion, curiosity, and acceptance. Combining these practices, as well as breathing techniques, particularly in the “Encourage Effective Coping” stage of a SAFER-R can aid in one’s effective recovery from a traumatic event, and provide additional tools for coping after traumatic events. The practice of mindfulness can also provide Peer Support Teams with additional skills for self-care and resilience as they are potentially exposed to secondary trauma by assisting their peers.
