B1 - Advanced Suicide Awareness: Strategic Connections and Tactical Interventions

No one in public safety is immune to suicide. While there are resources available to all first responders in their time of need, they are not being utilized effectively. However, it may be possible that learning to communicate effectively with co-workers, even when they don't display active suicidality, can bring about positive change in someone's life. This course will help to understand how stress affects first responder personnel differently, define suicidal factors you may not have thought about before, and use appropriate intervention strategies designed to "open the conversation". We will be discussing the concepts of "Moral Injury", "Pervasive Melancholy", and "PTSI" as they relate to suicidal ideation. We will also describe "Suicide Crisis Syndrome" and the concept of entrapment in an actively suicidal individual.
