Psychotherapist Team Lead Mental Health and Well Being Navan, Meath, Ireland
Community volunteers respond to tragic events and offer support. They are more effective as they are known in their community than organised government-based community support. Covid-19 demonstrated that in a new way, the people that know are the community leaders, whether in sports or scouting groups. In this context, I would argue that just as medical first aid has developed into on-call community responses, psychological first aid has a place in the community. Its effectiveness relies on the community nature of peer support. Medical First Aid in Ireland has developed into a standard that the Pre-Hospital Care Council have recognized that volunteers, especially in cardiac response, are the untapped response. CISM needs to recognise that resource as well.
