Mental Health Coordinator Joliet Fire Department Joliet, Illinois, United States
Local crisis intervention and long-term mental healthcare have proven to be a serious issue in Joliet, Illinois. In 2022, the Joliet, Illinois Fire Department developed and instituted a community mental health program by creating a public/private partnership with a private counseling service and a local hospital and training 200 member paramedics in a locally developed course entitled Crisis First AId for Paramedics (CFA-P). The development group included a doctoral counseling student, clinicians, the president of a local crisis line, a suicidologist, a chaplain, hospital administrators, and several chief-level officers of the Joliet Fire Department. The presentation includes a case study review of the development method and preliminary findings of effectiveness.
