Even when a person looks forward to retirement, it is not always a struggle-free condition. Retirement is among the most disruptive decisions of one’s life. It almost always is accompanied by significant challenges and unexpected experiences. There may be some fun and exciting elements to retirement, but, without a doubt, there may be some physical, cognitive, emotional, and behaviorally distressing circumstances as well. After a long career in the emergency services, retirements can be particularly difficult. The sudden cessation of a fairly action filled career leaves one feeling like the proverbial ‘fish out of water.’ A retirement can change one’s self view, life activities, and their mental and physical health. Knowing some of what to expect can prevent some of retirement’s most destructive consequences and lead, instead, to a happier and more fulfilling life after one’s career comes to an end.
