John is a former firefighter whose PhD research investigated the role of social support in posttraumatic growth. His early experience with peer-support teams at the police and fire departments in post-9/11 New York laid the foundations for his work in humanitarian aid and emergency services. Since leading the crisis response for the Metropolitan Police Service after London's 2017 terrorist attacks he has taken a scientific approach to CISM to both generate evidence for its benefits and to contradict the arguments of its critics. He is an Approved Instructor and ICISF Board member.
