Dr. Michael J. Fagel, from the Northern Illinois area, has served fire, rescue, EMS, law enforcement, corporate risk management for over 45 years. He was a FEMA reservist for 10 years and was deployed to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing as well as the World Trade Center in 2001 for over 100 days. He served on the FBI NDPO team from 1999-2001 in DC. He teaches bio-defense and homeland security at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and Northern Illinois University. Served four years at U.S. Army Homeland Defense Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) (part of the former Soldier and Biological Chemical Command (SBCOM) at Aberdeen Proving Grounds.
He has published 11 textbooks, Emergency Operations and Planning, Homeland Security and CEO’s Guide to Emergency Operations (Taylor and Francis 2022,2014-2012-2011-2010). His book 7th book, CRISIS MANAGEMENT earned the ASIS textbook of the year award in 2015. His 9th book, Soft Targets and Crisis Management was published in 2016 by CRC Press. His 11th Book, " Principles of Emergency Management and Emergency Operations Centers 2nd edition was awarded the ASIS book of the year in 2022.
He has been a speaker at many symposia and conferences in North America on disaster planning, response, and safety. Dr. Fagel has served local government as an elected and appointed official. Fagel holds the LIFETIME CEM credential from IAEM. He received the “Distinguished Service to Safety Award" from the National Security Council in 2002. (DSSA) Fagel serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Chicago Infragard, as well as a member of the ASIS School Safety & Security Council, lifetime member of ASIS, IAEM and NFPA. He has traveled worldwide, working on occupational safety, emergency planning, and food threat vulnerability. He spent 20 years at the LSU National Center for Biomedical Research &Training instructional support staff. Fagel taught the DHS Intelligence Academy Courses “Critical Thinking-Analytical Methods & “Principles of Intelligence Writing” courses. He spent 8 years teaching fusion center staff " Critical Infrastructure" at the intermediate & advanced levels.
He currently serves the Sugar Grove Fire Protection District Board Fagel, a 35-year member of the Northern Illinois Crisis Management Debriefing team (CISM) He also serves as a thesis advisor at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he teaches in the Masters of Public Policy program.
